What is your current position in Finas Malaysia?
I am currently the Sound Supervisor and Lead Sound Mixing Engineer at Finas.

What are some of the highlights of you career?
There are quite a number actually. I think the biggest achievement in my career is the creation of the Finas
Mix Studio. The idea was my brainchild, and I am very pleased to see my idea become reality.
The idea to build Malaysia’s first Dolby certified mixing studio was conceived while I was working on sound
post production and mixing for local movies. I realized that I always had to travel out of the country to
complete the sound production because there were no facilities in the country to complete the task.
So that is how I cam up with the idea to construct the Mix Stage Studio in Finas. This facility will enable
anyone to start and complete a movie sound production under one roof.
The other major achievement in my career would be training with one of the bestsoundpost production
engineers in the world Michael Hedges. He has won 2 Academy Awards for his work on the film “King Kong”
and “Lord of the Rings”. I managed to learn a lot for him, he trained me at Park Road Studios for one month.
The most valuable lesson I learnt from him is, a good sound engineer must always pay attention to detail of
the sound they are mixing or recording.
The other major achievement of my career is being recognized in the local industry for my work. I have been
awarded the “Anugerah Karyawan for Best Sound” for my work on 3 seperate films. I won one for my work in
2000 on the Film Badang, the other in 2002 for the Film Embun and the third in 2004 for the Film Paloh.

What do you think of SAE Institute and its courses?
In all honesty, I think SAE is the best school to go to if someone is interested in the audio and film feild. SAE
has already branded itself as the best education provider in these two fields.
When I wanted to learn sound engineering, I knew I had to do it in SAE Institute. This is because SAE is and
internationally recognized institution with great industry partners. This gave me self confidence when applying
for jobs as SAE was already know to produce good quality graduates in these fields.
Also their teaching methods are great and unique, because students alwyas get hands on approch to
studying and that is the best way to study in these fields. Furthermore they are equipped with industry
standard equipment and this is a tremendous advantage when I joint the industry, I was not lost when I had to
use the equipments as I have already familiarized myself in college. SAE is a trademark for audio and film education.

What would be your advice for students who are interested in this field of study?
My advice would be very simple; any individual interested in this feild should have a strong sense of self
disciplineand must be very organized. These two traits are crucial and will take you a long way in this industry.
It is easy to feel pressured in this field of work as there are always so many things to complete with in a short
period, but if you are organized it would be simple to complete any task.
Self discipline is also important because most of the time your projects will require you to work with people
from other departments. So you must always discipline yourself to keep appointments and deadlines.

How was your experience studying in SAE?
I initially enrolled myself into SAE Malaysia before deciding to study in Australia. The only reason i wanted to study in SAE Byron Bay, was because they offered a degree course, whilst I had to do a Diploma course in SAE Malaysia. SAE Byron Bay had world class facilities with excellent lecturers. I particularly owe my gratitude to my lecturers whom took time to educate me on my flaws.

What would be your advice for students who are interested in this field of study?
The Malaysian music industry offers very little opportunity to Audio Engineers. If you are a fairly good composer with extensive experience in Studio Production, then perhaps you might stand a chance to earn some decent income. However, if your desire is to make it big in the music industry or even Movies, i believe the future is relatively bleak. Sadly we all have to admit that the industry has diversified a little too much to our liking.
Technological advancement within the arc of softwares has seen many being able to adapt seamlessly, in other words making our profession a more general one than being a specialized profession. Having said that, we are all moving in the right direction, heading towards HD Production and Broadcast. In terms of audio, 5.1 surround is slowly but surely becoming more important. In fact, 5 years from now, every broadcast company in Malaysia has to adapt to HD formats hence giving the opportunity to Surround Sound.
Research is very very important!!! It will equip you with all the necessary knowledge to move forward in your career. Being able to analyze and devise a proper document with research background is a great advantage to us in our field. From program concepts utilizing research theories, to the implementation of audio technology or even any form of integration with audio and video is an added advantage. Especially in Malaysia. So get to know your friends research, absorb their information, use google scholar, try to interlink information and diversify from mastering the arts of recording. This helped me a lot.
