SAE Student’s Involvement in 2010 IPC Powerlifting World Championships Video Coverage
Eleven SAE Students took part in the 2010 International Paralympic Committee(IPC) Powerlifting Championships video coverage held in Stadium Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur on the 25 – 30th July 2010. It is a game for the disabled, where athletes compete with each other, by lifting the most weight. Athletes from 50 countries fight for the most collection of gold in various categories, which makes this event the largest of its kind.
SAE students were given the opportunity by the Malaysian Paralympic Council to provide the video coverage of the entire event from arrivals of the team, the game itself, departure of the team, and everything in between to be compiled as a documentary later.
“My task was to lead (as a producer) my team to capture footage and interviews and put together a story. The reason why we took part in this event is that, to get ourselves involve in an international level event so that we can get more exposure, to experience every aspect of a documentary production first hand, to put in practice of what we have learnt, but most of all to make people aware of the event which did not get much coverage from the mainstream media.
What we have learned from this event was too many to count. The experience from this event is something we cannot get in a classroom. For instance, some of the athletes were easy to work with and some were not, which forced us to work better on our communication skills. This project took about 2 weeks of shooting; it is essential for crews to have high motivation to get through the day. These were the things that we have to deal with day in to day out. Good planning and organizing are the keys to a good production. It was a valuable experience, although it was not an easy task. ”
At the end we were very pleased of the outcome of our hard work. We were also shocked when ESPN Asia requested our footage to be broadcasted on their network. Hearing this, my team and I knew that we had done a great job in covering this event.
