Eleven SAE Students took part in the 2010 International Paralympic Committee(IPC) Powerlifting Championships video coverage held in Stadium Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur on the 25 – 30th July 2010. It is a game for the disabled, where athletes compete with each other, by lifting the most weight. Athletes from 50 countries fight for the most collection of gold in various categories, which makes this event the largest of its kind.
SAE students were given the opportunity by the Malaysian Paralympic Council to provide the video coverage of the entire event from arrivals of the team, the game itself, departure of the team, and everything in between to be compiled as a documentary later.
“My task was to lead (as a producer) my team to capture footage and interviews and put together a story. The reason why we took part in this event is that, to get ourselves involve in an international level event so that we can get more exposure, to experience every aspect of a documentary production first hand, to put in practice of what we have learnt, but most of all to make people aware of the event which did not get much coverage from the mainstream media.
What we have learned from this event was too many to count. The experience from this event is something we cannot get in a classroom. For instance, some of the athletes were easy to work with and some were not, which forced us to work better on our communication skills. This project took about 2 weeks of shooting; it is essential for crews to have high motivation to get through the day. These were the things that we have to deal with day in to day out. Good planning and organizing are the keys to a good production. It was a valuable experience, although it was not an easy task. ”
At the end we were very pleased of the outcome of our hard work. We were also shocked when ESPN Asia requested our footage to be broadcasted on their network. Hearing this, my team and I knew that we had done a great job in covering this event.

Local film "RASUK" is a suspense-thriller film shot in a few locations in Malaysia. Two of our students were involved in the film production as Location Sound engineers. They got to the opportunity to meet and work with industry professionals during their involvement as location sound engineers.

Mr. Baldev, RASUK Film Director
At first I thought they were amateurs when they stepped on my set, but when it was time to work and when I saw the results, “I came to know that I was dealing with individuals who know what they were doing and they know how to work with professionals.”
The sounds that they picked up during the production at the different locations were amazing; the live sound they captured would give the movie a real feel as the reality of the sound can be felt.
Of course, I think the SAE Students have made me proud, it also made me realize that there are excellent sound engineers around. I would also like to thank them because they have given me the soul of my film “Rasuk”.
My advice to SAE Students is that they should be outgoing and take up every opportunity to work in this field to gain experience before they graduate. Like how these two engineering (students) did for my film “Rasuk”.

This was my first involvement in the film production with a senior director from the industry Mr Baldev. SAE Institute Malaysia and Mr. Baldev gave me the opportunity to learn and experience film production in the industry.
Besides being a location sound engineer for this production, I also picked up valuable information and so called “tips” from other departments as they were willing to share with us their expertise as well, like the camera department; they educated us on the RED ONE digital camera technology through the shoot.
We felt very comfortable working on the film production as we were able to relate to both divisions of the production the film division and the audio division.
I remember Mr. Baldive saying during the production “we are like a family for 18 days in this production”. To sum it all up I would say that it was enjoyable but at the same time very useful. I will be looking forward to explore and venture in-depth into the film industry in future.

Through my time working in this film production, I was able to experience film production in the industry, and also I have gained valuable exposure to the industry. I am really grateful for the opportunity given to me by this production company, and also to SAE for giving me the opportunity.
I hope that other SAE students may be involved with this kind of activities in the future. I believe it will give them much valuable experience which will benefit them as they go into the workplace.

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Open Rehearsal
On 20th November 2009, SAE Malaysia students had a unique experience observing the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s pre-performance preparation. The orchestra performed and rehearsed excerpts of Piano Concerto No.2 by Chopin, led by Maestro Clause Peter Flor and featured pianist Dong-Hyek Lim.
Orchestral music is only reinforced by the orchestra hall acoustics (No electrical amplification is required), and this makes it the purest form of sound projection.
SAE Malaysia students, as a part of their music appreciation subject, had a chance to learn more about the orchestral music instruments and also tune their ears by the natural dynamics and the wide frequency range of concert music.
We want to thank Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and its Education and Outreach Department to make the Encounter sessions happen. We also hope to be frequent visitors of such performances.

Your All-Access Pass, Connecting You To The Professionals.
Recently, SAE Malaysia students were taken on an exclusive, all access tour of the National Film Board FINAS’ Dolby Premier sound complex – before it was open to any public visit or commercial clients. This exclusive opportunity was only granted via our strong connection with FINAS. Opened on February 2009 by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the complex showcases a bevy of first-class, high-end filming equipment and facilities – a testimony of the government’s faith in the industry and the future generations of practitioner…practitioners that SAE Malaysia will partly train and develop.
Our academic team consists of either practicing experts or experiences pioneers in their respective fields. That’s because, we know the importance of not just providing students the knowledge they need to join the industry, but the right guidance and mentoring to survive and thrive in the industry.
At SAE Malaysia, you do not just attend lectures. You are coached into the industry by our industry experts. To teach future generations of practitioners, we have picked our academic team from among experts who have the passion and patience to teach the young.
And with an academic team that is ever eager to share their career-long experience, our students get first-hand advice and tips usually not found in any text books nor research database. And such advice and tips are an unwritten industry law which if you know them, sets you apart from all your peers!
Most of our graduates find immediate employment through recommendations and industry connections. Having an academic team that has the right connections with the industry means students and graduates has exclusive access where it matters. And that, is a short cut that others find hard to provide.
